这篇小故事最初发表于1840年10月在哥本哈根出版的《沙龙》杂志上。安徒生在他的手记中说，这是一个在民间口头上流传的故事，他记得很清楚。于是，就写成一篇童话，把这个故事的这样内涵意义表达出来：一个貌似凶猛、不可一世的暴君——即现代所谓的*者——往往会在一些渺小的人物手上栽跟头，导致他的“伟大事业彻底失败”。这个故事中的王子做梦也没有想到，他会被一个钻进他的耳朵里去的小蚊蚋弄得最后发了疯。HERE lived once upon a time a wicked prince whose heart and mind were to set upon conquering all the countries of the world, and on frightening the people; he devastated their countries with fire and sword, and his soldiers trod down the crops in the fields and destroyed the peasants' huts by fire, so that the flames licked the green leaves off the branches, and the fruit hung dried up on the singed black trees. Many a poor mother fled, her naked baby in her arms, behind the still smoking walls of her cottage; but also there the soldiers followed her, and when they found her, she served as new nourishment to their diabolical enjoyments; demons could not possibly have done worse things than these soldiers! The prince was of opinion that all this was right, and that it was only the natural course which things ought to take. His power increased day by day, his name was feared by all, and fortune favoured his deeds. He brought enormous wealth home from the conquered towns, and gradually accumulated in his residence riches which could nowhere be equalled. He erected magnificent palaces, churches, and halls, and all who saw these splendid buildings and great treasures exclaimed admiringly: “What a mighty prince!” But they did not know what endless misery he had brought upon other countries, nor did they hear the sighs and lamentations which rose up from the débris of the destroyed cities. The prince often looked with delight upon his gold and his magnificent edifices, and thought, like the crowd: “What a mighty prince! But I must have more—much more. No power on earth must equal mine, far less exceed it.” He made war with all his neighbours, and defeated them. The conquered kings were chained up with golden fetters to his chariot when he drove through the streets of his city. These kings had to kneel at his and his courtiers' feet when they sat at table, and live on the morsels which they left. At last the prince had his own statue erected on the public places and fixed on the royal palaces; nay, he even wished it to be placed in the churches, on the altars, but in this the priests opposed him, saying: “Prince, you are mighty indeed, but God's power is much greater than yours; we dare not obey your orders.” “Well,” said the prince. “Then I will conquer God too.” And in his haughtiness and foolish presumption he ordered a magnificent ship to be constructed, with which he could sail through the air; it was gorgeously fitted out and of many colours; like the tail of a peacock, it was covered with thousands of eyes, but each eye was the barrel of a gun. The prince sat in the centre of the ship, and had only to touch a spring in order to make thousands of bullets fly out in all directions, while the guns were at once loaded again. Hundreds of eagles were attached to this ship, and it rose with the swiftness of an arrow up towards the sun. The earth was soon left far below, and looked, with its mountains and woods, like a cornfield where the plough had made furrows which separated green meadows; soon it looked only like a map with indistinct lines upon it; and at last it entirely disappeared in mist and clouds. Higher and higher rose the eagles up into the air; then God sent one of his numberless angels against the ship. The wicked prince showered thousands of bullets upon him, but they rebounded from his shining wings and fell down like ordinary hailstones. One drop of blood, one single drop, came out of the white feathers of the angel's wings and fell upon the ship in which the prince sat, burnt into it, and weighed upon it like thousands of hundredweights, dragging it rapidly down to the earth again; the strong wings of the eagles gave way, the wind roared round the prince's head, and the clouds around—were they formed by the smoke rising up from the burnt cities?—took strange shapes, like crabs many, many miles long, which stretched their claws out after him, and rose up like enormous rocks, from which rolling masses dashed down, and became fire-spitting dragons. The prince was lying half-dead in his ship, when it sank at last with a terrible shock into the branches of a large tree in the wood. “I will conquer God!” said the prince. “I have sworn it: my will must be done!” And he spent seven years in the construction of wonderful ships to sail through the air, and had darts cast from the hardest steel to break the walls of heaven with. He gathered warriors from all countries, so many that when they were placed side by side they covered the space of several miles. They entered the ships and the prince was approaching his own, when God sent a swarm of gnats—one swarm of little gnats. They buzzed round the prince and stung his face and hands; angrily he drew his sword and brandished it, but he only touched the air and did not hit the gnats. Then he ordered his servants to bring costly coverings and wrap him in them, that the gnats might no longer be able to reach him. The servants carried out his orders, but one single gnat had placed itself inside one of the coverings, crept into the prince's ear and stung him. The place burnt like fire, and the poison entered into his blood. Mad with pain, he tore off the coverings and his clothes too, flinging them far away, and danced about before the eyes of his ferocious soldiers, who now mocked at him, the mad prince, who wished to make war with God, and was overcome by a single little gnat. 疯狂英语（CrazyEnglish）大概就仅供娱乐，没有太多的实际内容，但是有很多的版本，可以根据喜好来定。TEENS中国日报社的英语报纸，大多中学都会给学生定的如果真是为了学英语知识的话，向LZ推荐《空中英语教室》（studioclassroomworldwide）还会有配套的节目，每天都会播出，没有那个台的话，土豆网也每天都有前一天的节目。而且很有用。祝LZ进步喽...

《英语广场》内容比较时尚、青春，当中所写的文章都是中学生比较感兴趣的。每期杂志开头都有2页彩色印刷的关于名人的语录。杂志分为“In every issue每期必有”“Readd&Recite美文诵典”“In the news快报""VIP人物”“Discovery发现”“Speak smart脱口而出”“Teen Topic话题”“Over there那边”“Movie上映”“Literary World名篇”“Sports体育”“Read for fun轻松阅读”“Living English实战英语”“Music音乐”“Chicken Soup心灵鸡汤”几个模块。推荐推荐。。。。而且难度不大，并且附有中英文对照，而且有生词解释等.而且价格不高，《英语角》“说时尚美语的第一选择”“一本地道、时髦、好玩、实用的美语口语杂志”就我个人意见来说《英语角》还是不错的，内容有点像剧本，主要是通过人物之间的对话这种方式去提高口语（表达）能力的——每一篇东东都有列举相关的句型句式并进行剖析，而且针对不同的对话背景有相关的背景介绍（文化）。中英对译。难度不大，适合初中生阅读（阅读年龄：14～20岁）《英语画刊》（初一～初三）针对不同水平的学生而量身定做。主要栏目有名著之窗、国际新闻、风云人物、时文阅读、五洲四海、卡通列车、文娱天地、体育之窗、我们的园地、英语作文、妙语如珠、你问我答、课测练习、学习指导、阅读理解、科技纵横、文化博览、趣味小品、幽默与笑话等众多栏目，并配有与英语教学同步的练习和中、高考复习资料。《疯狂英语中学版》我还是觉得难度稍微大了点，而且可读性不太强（我买过一本，但觉得没有兴趣去看）也不妨可以考虑一下报纸：《二十一世纪学生英文报》有初一～高三版，以阅读材料为主，而且分为8个版面－主版（热点），时事频道，青春校园（讲述校园故事），知识之窗（2版），轻松阅读，英语加油站和文娱空间。最重要的是它的内容与课本内容完全无关，不像《英语周报》《英语辅导报》那样，它旨在提高阅读能力和词句积累，而且有阅读提示"teens点金”——包括中考词汇、考点看台、拓展词汇、真题演练等等，我觉得这个挺不错，强烈推荐，订了2年了..

英语沙龙杂志少儿版好吗

英语街和英语沙龙相比英语沙龙好。1、英语沙龙是中国认可度最高的英语杂志其系列刊物包括《英语沙龙》初级、阅读、实战版《英语文摘》时事《英语心境》哲理文字等文章都是采撷国外刊。2、《英语街》是重庆出版社出版发行的英语学习杂志，有初中版和高中版。3、相比内容实用性，《英语沙龙》是全方面注重培养，《英语街》是注重口语方面，相较之下英语沙龙好。

都是月刊会吗?我觉得英语文摘还要难一点,我以前很喜欢买英语角,那个比较有意思,而且很美语化,对练习口语来说真的帮助很大。

英语沙龙分好几版，如阅读版，实战版，学生版，针对性很强。但是个人觉得英语文摘的文章更地道一些，都是摘自times,economists等等杂志。

<英语沙龙>是适合大学生的英语读物,不适合初学者,虽然它内容丰富.可以用<新概念>

兄弟，每一本杂志都有我们所需要的知识，不管你的水平怎么样。英语沙龙，不错~板块丰富，重要的是互动性强。。我推荐：空中英语杂志，不知道你是否买得到，因为这样的杂事，有音频，视频，很棒的~

这要看你自己对哪一方面的要求了，《疯狂英语》比较偏向于东西方文化，《英语广场》对词汇的提高有很好的帮助，《英语沙龙》没看过。

有词典就差不多了~~但有一定的难度
