人与自然环境的关系问题,是普通关注的问题,人们对于这一问题关注的目的在于可持续发展。中国是个文明古国,中华文化之所以在长达数千年的历史而不衰,可持续。近代工业文明以前是为农业文明。KING称以中国为中心的农业为可持续农业。探讨中国传统农学理论与实践中的天人关系。从中得到启示。天人关系指的是人与大自然的关系。[1]在传统的中国人心中,农业中的人与大自然的关系具体表现为人、天、地、稼的关系。故《吕氏春秋·审时》说:“夫稼,生之者,地也;养之者,天也;为之者,人也”。其中天和地是大自然的代表,相当于现在人们所说的环境,人和稼生于天地之间,天人关系也可以理解为人与自然环境的关系,不过其中加入了稼的因素,稼同时具有自然的因素和人的因素。人按照需要与可能选择和种植作物。传统农业中人与自然环境的关系如何?过去在研究农业史时,强调人定胜天,强调人对于环境的改造,过份地强调人及其技术的作用,而技术又过分地强调土壤耕作技术。原始农业中刀耕农业和耜耕农业阶段的划分;传统农业中北方旱作技术体系的形成和南方水田技术体系的形成等,都是主要以土壤耕作技术为依据来划分的。现在,环境问题日益受到重视,人们开始重新用审视的目光看待人与自然环境的问题,在这种背景之下,一些历史地理学家开始强调环境对人的作用,甚至有学者重新祭起了地理环境决定论的大旗,[2]受此影响农业史研究中,一些学者过多地把目光指向环境及其变迁对于农业的影响,指向农业对于环境的破坏,而忽视了人的主观能动性,忽视了人对于环境的保护[3]与改造,更忽视了人对于环境的适应。这些都不符合中国传统农业发展历史的实际。我们认为,中国农业的发展受到环境的制约,环境变迁也引起过中国农业的波动,但真正决定中国农业发展的是人对于环境的适应和改造。一、环境对农业的影响中国人很早就注意到了环境对于农业的影响。同时也注意到环境是由多种因素构成的,各种因素对于农业的影响并不相同,具体说来,天和地对于作物的影响是不同的。古人将它归纳为“生之者,地也;养之者,天也。”地,即土壤。由于在构成环境的诸多因素中,土壤与作物的关系最为直接,因而也最先为人所注意。古人认为作物的种类是由“地”来决定的。经常提到的例子是:“桔逾淮而北为枳,鸐鹆不逾济,貉逾汶则死。”[4]“菘菜不生北土。有人将子北种;初一年,半为芜菁,二年,菘种都绝。有将芜菁子南种,亦二年都变。”[5]前者说“此地气然也”,后者说“土地所宜”。地气和土地,指的都是土壤。土壤是导致变异的根源。[6]在土壤中首先注意到的是土壤上生长的植被。《师旷占术》曰:“五木者,五谷之先;欲知五谷,但视五木。择其木盛者,来年多种之,万不失一也。”《杂阴阳书》则将“五谷”和“五木”一一对应起来,有所谓:禾生于枣或杨,黍生于榆,大豆生于槐,小豆生于李,麻生于杨或荆,大麦生于杏,小麦生于桃,稻生于柳或杨。”孔子也说:“平原大蔽,瞻其草之高丰茂者,必有怪鸟兽居之,且草可财也,如艾而夷之,其地必宜五谷。”植被不仅是土壤状况的标志,同时还可以用作改善土壤的物质。中国人很早就认识到,杂草“可以粪田畴,可以美土疆”,并将“于草木茂盛时芟倒,就地内罨腐烂也”,称为“草粪”。还有意识地种植一些豆科植物充当绿肥。民族学调查表明,中国南方的一些少数民族在进行刀耕火种的时候,首先选择林地而不是草地去作为土地,而在林地的选择方面主要考虑的是林木的长势和种类,而不是土壤的质地。决定什么地种什么庄稼也是根据树木,而不是根据土壤。其次是土壤的性状(颜色、手感、水份、土壤中的生物活动等)。禹平洪水之后,茫茫禹迹,划为九州,九州的土壤,各不相同,《尚书·禹贡》言之凿凿。不同的土壤进而有不同的农产品,《周礼·职方氏》记载甚详。《管子·地员》说:“九州之土,为九十物。每州有常而物有次。”书中还具体指出了九州土壤性状及适宜种植的作物。被李约瑟等称为是最早的地植物学著作。由于决定适宜作物的是土壤而不是行政区划,所以元代孟祺在《论九谷风土及种莳时月》又做了这样的发挥:“苟涂泥所在,厥田中下,稻即可种,不必拘以荆、扬。土壤黄白,厥田上中,黍、稷、粱、菽即可种,不必限于雍、冀。坟、垆、黏、埴,田杂三品,麦即可种,又不必以并、青、兖、豫为定也。”再次是地势。或认为《禹贡》中的“厥田中中”、“厥田中下”等,指的就是地势。“凡草土之道,各有谷造,或高或下,各有草木。”植物的垂直分布也直接影响到了作物的分布,古人说:“三农生九谷”[7],所谓“三农”,郑司农(众)曰:“三农,平地、山、泽也。”(郑)玄谓三农,“原、隰及平地”。“三农生九谷”,正反映了环境因素中地势对于作物的制约。水流径于地。和土关系最为密切的便是水,有时水甚至是土壤的组成部分,如《禹贡》中所说的“涂泥”,其中的“泥”,实际上就是水和土的混和物[8]。水是生命的重要组成部分,也是生物发生变异的根源,所以古人又说:“桔生淮南则为桔,生于淮北则为枳,叶徒相似,其实味不同。所以然者何?水土异也。”[9]今人有言,“一方水土养一方人”。对于某些生物来说,水更是须臾不可或缺。如水稻,《天工开物》说:“凡稻旬日失水则死期至。”水成为发展水稻生产最大的制约因素,于是中国历史上就有了“东周欲为稻,西周不下水”的故事发生。上述因素,古人统称之为“土”,“土气”或“地气”、“水土”。不同的土壤是有不同的物产,它们之间的引种是不可能的。即使强行为之,不是死亡,就是变异。于是有“桔逾淮而北则为枳”,“芜菁南种则为菘”的说法。狭义的天,指的是环境中的气候因素。气候随季节而变化,故称之为天时,用之于农业称之为农时。《孟子》说:“不违农时,谷不可胜食也。”《吕氏春秋·审时》更从“得时”和“先时”、“后时”对六种主要粮食作物的不同生产效果作了细致的对比。来论证“时”对庄稼生长的极端重要性。宋人将地势引入到农时之中,提出天时有“地势高下之不同”[10],认为“高下之势既异,则寒燠肥瘠各不同。”[11]元代农学家更将时与地(纬度和海拔高度)结合起来。不仅指出了气候寒暑与纬度高低的关系,而且强调共性之间的特殊性,要求人们在选择农时的时候,应当考虑当地的实际情况来决定,这就叫做“因地为时”。[12]古人尽管对农时重视有加,但是他们对天时的认识是不全面的。也就是说,古人只是注意到了气候对于作物生长的影响,而没有注意到气候对于作物分布的影响,他们把各地作物不同的原因更多地认为是土壤的不同的结果,尽管元代引入了风土的概念,部分地考虑到了气候的因素,但他们总体上还是将土壤看作是根本的原因。只是到了明末,这种认识才发生了根本性变化。徐光启认为作物栽种中的地区差异性,在引种的过程中“亦有不宜者,则是寒暖相违,天气所绝,无关于地”;是以“果若尽力树艺,殆无不可宜者,就令不宜,或是天时未合,人力未至耳”。“若谓土地所宜,一定不易,此则必无之理”。[13]徐光启明确提出了气候是引起作物分布差异的原因的观点。
