一、文化差异产生的原因及其对英汉翻译的影响 由于不同国家在地理位置、社会制度、历史背景、以及思考模式等方面的不同,其文化之间也必然会产生差异。这些文化差异主要存在于风俗习惯、行为方式、和语言特点等方面。语言是文化的载体,也是文化的必要组成部分,所以语言在很大程度上要受到不同国家文化差异的影响。而翻译作为两个国家间交流的重要方式,主要是依靠两国间语言的转换完成的。因此,不同语言间的文化差异在很大程度上会影响到翻译活动。 在中英翻译过程中,人们普遍认为文化差异因素对翻译的影响是很难避免的。译者必须认识到翻译并不仅仅是两种语言之间的相互转换,翻译还是两种文化信息之间的相互转换。译者在翻译过程中必须把两种语言背后的文化差异因素纳入考虑中。如果译者完全不顾及两种语言间的文化差异因素,那么译文读者在接受译作的过程中必定会遇到这样或那样的困难,译者也很难将原作的信息完整准确地传递给译文读者。 二、归化和异化 施莱尔马赫在《论翻译的方法》中指出:“翻译可以有两种不同途径,一是尽可能地不扰乱原作者的安宁,让读者去接近作者;二是尽可能地不扰乱读者的安宁,让作者去接近读者。”韦努蒂在此基础上提出了规划法(domestication)和异化法(foreignization)。 韦努蒂提出的归化法翻译原则是站在以英语为目的语(译入语)的立场上的,也就是说要“归化”到英语中来。归化法就是 译者以目的语为依据,尽量减少译文中的异国情调,为译文读者提供一种自然流畅的译文。即,尽量不让译文读者感受到译者的存在,像是在读本国作者用本国语言所写的作品一样。 异化翻译原则强调译者尽可能地不扰乱原作者的安宁,让读者去接近作者。与归化翻译原则相反,异化翻译原则要求译者要主动接受外语表达习惯和特点,并主动吸收外语表达的特殊方式。译者必须以原文为依据,不得擅自改变原作者的意图,要做原作者的“仆人”。异化翻译原则充分考虑到翻译过程中的文化差异因素,并使译作尽量保留原作中的异域风情及不同的风俗习惯,把“最真实”的异国文化展现给译文读者。韦努蒂认为,异化翻译原则可以“保留原作的语言和文化差异,并将读者送到异国。”如果译者在翻译过程中采用异化翻译原则,译文读者将能够充分感受到异国文化和语言的魅力与不同。 随着经济、政治、文化、资源、科技教育的全球化进程不断发展,整个世界的一体化进程也在不断加速。不同文化、不同国家的人民之间对彼此的文化了解进一步加深。因此,译者应当相信在文化全球化日益加深条件下的译文读者有能力去了解异国的风俗与文化。上文中已经提到,翻译是不同文化间进行交流的重要手段。因此,译者的在翻译中的任务就不仅仅是将作品从一种语言转换到另一种语言,他还担负着将异域习俗与文化展现给译文读者的任务。而这种传播将在很大程度上丰富并完善译入语,同时也会增强译出语的影响与生命力。 三、影响归化和异化使用的因素 郭建中认为,“如果考虑到作者的意图、文本的类型、翻译的目的和读者的要求者四个可变因素,归化和异化均有其存在和应用的价值。”一般来说,如果译者希望为译文读者介绍更多的异国风俗与文化,而且译文读者也更愿意学习和欣赏外国文化,那么译者就应当采用异化的翻译原则。但如果译者更希望取悦译文读者,使译作更加易读、易懂,而且译文读者阅读译作也只是为了娱乐,那么译者就应当采用归化的翻译原则。
